OTHER THERAPIES - AROMATHERAPY
Aromatherapy is a healing therapy that utilises the properties
and aromas of essential plant oils. It is defined as the systematic use of
essential oils in holistic treatments to help improve physical and emotional
well-being.
Aromatheraphy is a truly holistic therapy in that it aims
to treat the whole person by taking account not only of their physical state
but also their emotions.
Modern usage of the word 'aromatherapie' originated with
the french chemist Rene Maurice Gattefosse. In the 1920's he suffered burns
to his arm and hand in a laboratory accident and he plunged his arm into a
container of pure lavender essential oil, mistaking it for water. Despite
third-degree burns he made a speedy recovery with no scarring. During the
second World War lavender oil was used to help save soldiers limbs that were
being lost to gangrene. Aromatheraphy oils were also used by ancient civilisations
of Egypt, the Middle East, India and Greece.
Essential oils occur widely in the plant kingdom and are
sometimes referred to as the plants' life force. The oils enter the body by
two main routes - the skin and the nose. They enter and leave the body efficiently
leaving no toxins behind. When inhaled, essential oils
come into contact with the olfactory system located in the nose and behind
the eyes. These oils are also absorbed easily through the pores and the hair
follicles in the skin.
AROMATHERAPY TODAY AND THE BENEFITS OF A TREATMENT
FOR MANY MEDICAL CONDITIONS
The purpose of aromatherapy massage is to aid the penetration
of essential oils into the body and to treat problem areas. Although it has
been practiced for thousands of years aromatherapy has only recently become
popular in our culture. This is a result of a return to the holistic lifestyle
recognizing the importance of combining the mind, body and spirit to achieve
optimum health and well-being.
• MUSCULAR ACHES AND PAINS
