OTHER THERAPIES - SHAITSU

Shiatsu (in Japanese means ‘finger pressure’) is a form of bodywork performed through clothing, in which variable pressure is applied together with more vigorous stretches and rotations when appropriate. A treatment will involve hands, elbows, knees and feet to target ‘meridians’ known as energy pathways and specific points, known as ‘acupoints’. This stimulates the body’s vital energy (Ki), harnessing it where it is depleted and dispersing it from where it is congested. The philosophy underlying Shiatsu is that Ki can stop flowing freely and this then produces a symptom.

The origins of Shiatsu are rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine as in acupuncture and combine with ancient Japanese massage techniques along with knowledge of Western Anatomy, Physiology and Psychology.

Shiatsu is a therapy that works on the individual as a complete being – at physical, emotional and mental levels. The aim is to restore health and vitality by activating the body’s natural self-healing abilities. Shiatsu can be used effectively as a preventative healthcare programme as well as helping to combat specific ailments.

Conditions that can be relieved include fatigue, migraine, depression, stress disorders, hormonal imbalances, addictions, structural problems, digestive and respiratory ailments. Shiatsu can also assist in supporting the body through pregnancy and after birth.
